Lenovo laptop: install fresh OEM Windows to new SSD

Because Lenovo does not provide OS installation disc but the fool enough OneKey Recovery, user has one way , the only and official way to install a fresh windows or restore from the saved image. Unfortunately, if user forgot to make any recovery image or tried to replace the built in hd with ssd, or both, like me, the OKR won't work. The online official forum doesn't help and Google returns no simple way. Me don't understand why the Lenovo doesn't provide the os disc, that saves no money but requires more users's efforts when they are panic or want to make some changes.

I conclued the way as following.

BTW: The pronouncation of Lenovo in mandarin sounds like "come to pull my leg" ;-), it deserves the name very well.

First if all, be sure you DID NOT destory your original Lenovo hd, before you get all things down, you still NEED it.

1. You don't need any third party tools like "bootable UFD maker".

UFD means usb flash disk.

Most of them potentially have virus, malicious software, or ad software. Ok, I don't trUst them at all.

2. You need a Windows pc.

Or you can use the one you will refresh, to prepare the installation.

3. You need install windows AIK toolkit.

Which can be download from ms site and replaces the position of third party tools.

4. You should be familar with windows command line tool.

To run the cmd line instruction and application.

5. You have a bootable UFD with minimum size of 1G.

When everything is ready, you can start the fun part.

Let's assume you want to replace the built in and much slower hd with a new faster ssd.

1. Making a bootable UFD.

With the windows aik tool, you can create a bootable usb disk with winpe.

Here is the reference link of how to create bootable usb disk with windows AIK:點擊打開鏈接.

2. Copy the imagex tools and install.wim to UFD.

The imagex tool can be located under your AIK directory. Be sure to copy the whole imagex directory to UFD, or imagex will shout out. Search the install.wim on your old Lenovo hd, and copy it to UFD.

3. Create partitions in sad and replace your old HD with it.

You can run diskpart command(with admin rights), but I failed to make it bootable. The alternative way I used is installing a windows(with my old windows 7 installing disc) to ssd, during the installation you can perform the partition and then the ssd became bootable after installation.

4. Boot from UFD and restore install.wim.

By run:

imagex /apply install.wim 1 c:\

The fresh OEM windows will be restored to your SSD.

Probably you need to run bcdboot command to rebuild boot chain, which is beyond this article, please google it.

5. Remove UFD and reboot.

Sit down and prey, if lucky, you will get a fresh Lenovo OEM windows.

Good luck!

BTW: you can also use imagex to create an image of your old windows, if you love it too much. But the creating and restoring image will take very looooooooong time(count by hours, depends on how big the old windows' size is).
