linux有兩種版本，一個是核心（kernel)版，一個是發行(distribution)版。核心版的序號由三部分數字構成，其形式爲：
major.minor.patchlevel
其中，majoro爲主版本號，minor爲次版本號，二者共同構成了當前核心版本號。patchlevel表示對當前版本的修訂次數。例如，2.2.11表示對核心作用2.2 版本的第11次修訂。
根據約定，次版本號爲奇數時，表示該版本加入新內容，但不一定穩定，相當於測試版；次版本號爲偶數時，表示這是一個可以使用的穩定版本。
鑑於Linux內核開發工作的連續性，內核的穩定版本與在此基礎上進一步開發的不穩定版本總是同時存在的。建議 採用穩定的核心版本 。
