理解幾個Linux版本概念:BSD、SunOS、Mach、TOPS-20

  • BSD(Berkeley Software Distribution)

    From wikipedia, the BSD was an operating system based on Research Unix, developed and distributed by the Computer Systems Research Group at the University of California, Berkeley.

    Its descendants:

    • FreeBSD
    • OpenBSD
    • NetBSD
    • DragonFly BSD
  • SunOS(Sun Microsystems)

    From wikipedia, SunOS is a Unix-branded operating system developed by Sun Microsystems for their workstation and server computer systems.

    The SunOS name is usually only used to refer to versions 1.0 to 4.1.4, which were based on BSD, while versions 5.0 and later are based on Unix System V Release 4, and are marketed under the brand name Solaris.

    Sun Microsystems, Inc. was an American company that sold computers, computer components, software, and information technology services and created the:

    • Java programming language
    • Solaris operating system
    • ZFS
    • Network File System(NFS)
    • Sparc

    Sun contributed significantly to the evolution of several key computing technologies, among them :

    • Unix
    • RISC processors
    • thin client computing
    • virtualized computing

    Sun was founded on February 24, 1982, and acquired by Oracle Corporation for US $7.4 billion.

  • Mach

    From wikipedia, Mach is a kernel developed at Carnegie Mellon University to support operating system research, primarily distributed and parallel computing.

  • TOPS-20

    The TOPS-20 operating system by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) was a proprietary OS used on some of DEC’s 36-bit mainframe computers. The Hardware Reference Manual was described as for “DECsystem-10/DECSYSTEM-20 Processor” (meaning the DEC PDP-10 and the DECSYSTEM-20).
