院長對話:如何做出卓越的研究(Great Research)?

Hopcroft八十歲生日的時候,John提了一個概念,他覺得Great Research最後是能寫到大家的教科書裏,我覺得非常有道理。今年他的一個學生拿到圖靈獎,肯定深得John的真傳,他了不起的地方是不光在編譯做了很多貢獻,還寫了很多本書,他把“Great Research”?我覺得這個問題本身就是一個Great Research。我覺得真正能夠評價研究的只有一個東西——時間,時間是最好的驗證標準。說實在話,你做研究的時候不會知道這是不是Great Research,每個人需要有一些什麼樣的特質?"},{"type":"text","text":"不管從導師角度、還是研究院評估員工,都會有一套自己的看法。我還是先請禮棟院長分享一下,真正做好Great Research要做什麼準備?不是所有人都能做出Great Research。"}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null}},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","marks":[{"type":"strong"}],"text":"周禮棟:"},{"type":"text","text":"我們在選拔人才時需要有一些標準。Harry(沈向洋)是前院長,他當時立了一個標準,說我們要招三好學生:數學好、編程好、態度好。後來我引申了一下,數學好是要專業技術好,專業技術好並不是你懂多少,而是你有獲得這樣一個專業知識的學習能力;編程好,引申爲能把一些IDEA變成真正的Impact,這個需要通過編程或者做實驗等等方式;態度好也非常重要,研究有時候是非常孤獨和痛苦的過程,你一定要能夠有成長性的思維,能夠有持久性、有熱情。"}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null}},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","text":"後來我也觀察了一下,我在微軟亞洲研究院前幾年時,有幸遇到一些拿圖靈獎的學者,我也觀察了他們的特質,當然跟我們選拔人才還不一樣,但也有很多有啓發的地方。對於這些大師來說,研究從來不是像我們一般人想的,你去發表一篇文章,而是要追求極致的正確性,真理。"}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null}},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","text":"這對我感觸非常大,你要做卓越研究,這種精神可能真的是我們每個人都應該認真思考的,而不是光看在如今這個研究環境下怎樣才能在頂會發表文章,這可能還是過於短視。"}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","text":" "}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","marks":[{"type":"strong"}],"text":"李世鵬:"},{"type":"text","text":"謝謝禮棟,我覺得做卓越的研究,還是要坐得住,靜下心,耐得住寂寞,這確實是一個特質之一。下面請東曉校長分享一下他的觀點。"}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","text":" "}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","marks":[{"type":"strong"}],"text":"張東曉:"},{"type":"text","text":"這麼多年指導學生做研究,蠻有體會的。學生從一開始對這個領域一無所知,再到有創新,做出卓越的研究,是有一個過程的。"}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null}},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","text":"對學生的訓練,開始時肯定不能給學生一個特別高的目標,或者近期夠不到的目標,那他很快就會有挫折感,得讓他夠一夠就能做出點成就,就會非常欣慰,非常有成就感,就可以繼續往前創新。先練手,再創新。"}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null}},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","text":"另一方面,做研究時,不怕有挫折感,要有屢敗屢戰的精神。失敗了,只是還沒成功而已,到底是屢戰屢敗還是屢敗屢戰,就看到底是樂觀的還是悲觀的。對學生來講,要鼓勵他們,這個只是還沒有成功,可能還有別的路徑。"}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null}},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","text":"我一直鼓勵學生,我說做研究,不是你一年356天、天天要做研究,天天要想這個問題。但如果要解決一個問題,你要集中精力,認真地思考一陣子。如果同樣是40個小時,你把它分成5天做和2天、3天做,40個小時的效果是不一樣的。可能一段時間集中精力、集中思考一陣子。再狠狠地休息一陣子,效果反而會更好一些。"}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null}},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","text":"我們做老師的就有這種成就感,看見學生成長起來就很高興。我經常跟我的學生講,他剛到我這個課題組跟我做學生時,我說是我教你,到你畢業時,肯定是你教我。因爲你要在我這裏拿博士,在任何地方拿博士都要創新,沒有創新是拿不到博士學位的。在好的大學,要拿博士學位,肯定要有很好的創新,既然是創新,肯定比老師強,如果老師都懂的東西,還需要你創新嗎?到最後肯定是學生教老師。等你教會我時,我又可以去教新的學生了。這就是創新,學生培養的好處。"}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","text":" "}]},{"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"indent":0,"number":0,"align":null,"origin":null},"content":[{"type":"text","marks":[{"type":"strong"}],"text":"陳寶權:"},{"type":"text","text":"關於做研究需要什麼特質、潛質,坦率講,對這方面我最近還挺有探索和摸索。北大有一個圖靈班,我開了一個科研實踐課,兩個學期。在這個過程中,我一直在進行探索。關於科研需要什麼必要條件,大家都說得很多。但我的一個深刻感受是,這些必要條件是需要的,沒什麼可說的。但如何從做Good Research到Great
