Jurassic World Trilogy as well as the culmination of the franchise

Jurassic World Dominion is nearly two months from its theatrical release. The epic conclusion to the Jurassic World Trilogy as well as the culmination of the franchise which started with Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park (1994), is one of the most anticipated films of the year. The film will merge events from the previous trilogy into the new ones, bringing back the star cast of the original Jurassic films and uniting them with the Chris Pratt-led cast of the new films for a final showdown.

In the film, the humans have been facing an ecological disaster after the destruction of Isla Nublar, and Maisie Lockwood’s release of dinosaur species resulted in a neo-Jurassic era. The new world now sees dinosaurs and humans co-existing in the same ecosystem, but not without the consequent changes in the food chain and other environmental factors. And the film is diving deep into each of this story’s facets with the longest runtime for any Jurassic Series film.

According to Collider, the film will clock at 2 Hours and 26 Minutes, making it the longest film in the franchise. No other film, be it any of the two trilogies, has made to this mark in its running time. Falling a little short of 2.5 hours, the film is more than an hour longer than Jurassic Park III, which was just a little over an hour and a half.

The film is featuring a long slate of stars, and it shall combine elements from all films to give the audience, not just a satisfactory conclusion story-wise but also a visual spectacle experience. Given such a massive cast and a unique plot to unravel and explore, it’s probable that this is the reason that the film’s reported runtime exceeds all of its predecessors.

Audience Rooting For Longer Runtimes

After the post-COVID reopening of theaters, a substantial slate of releases has seen films that are clocking near or over two-and-a-half hours. While many have received a mixed response, the majority of them have been tested to be pretty much positive during test screenings and openings as well. And it has been the case with a lot of franchise films. Earlier, for streaming, Zack Snyder's Justice League clocked at 4 Hours and was unexpectedly received well despite an unusual run time.

Most recently, Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home were almost 2.5 hours long, while Dune clocked at 2 Hours and Thirty-Five Minutes. All of these films, except for Eternals, were received well by the audience, with Dune which went deep into Frank Herbert's far-stretched universe leading the Oscars buzz for the year. Once again, most recently, Matt Reeves' The Batman's theatrical cut was 175 minutes long, making it the longest solo Batman film.

Directors like Christopher Nolan, Matt Reeves, and Martin Scorsese have always rooted for longer runtime in order for them to make their films' narratives more thorough, allowing time for adding more character details while maintaining the audience-friendly sequences of cheering entertainment. With Jurassic World Dominion, which features a never-explored-before story with a long line of characters consuming space on-screen, it's probably a good thing for the film to take the risk of a longer runtime and prevent overstuffing of story elements in a shorter time frame.

Jurassic World Dominion releases on June 10, 2022. The film, directed by ColinTrevorrow, stars an ensemble including Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, DeWanda Wise, Campbell Scott, Daniella Pineda, Justice Smith, Isabella Sermon, Omar Sy, and BD Wong.
