总部位于美国的智库周四表示，朝鲜似乎正在扩大其核试验场的工作，以包括第二条隧道，因为韩国和美国官员表示，朝鲜可能在任何一天进行核试验。
战略与国际研究中心在一份报告中援引商业卫星图像称，丰溪里核试验设施第 3 号隧道的准备工作显然已经完成，并为可能的核试验做好了准备。
从 2006 年到 2017 年，朝鲜在该地点进行了六次地下核试验。
该研究小组表示，分析师首次在该设施的 4 号隧道发现了新的建设活动，“强烈建议努力重新启用它以进行未来的潜在测试”。
它说，在 3 号隧道外，图像显示一堵挡土墙和一些小树或灌木丛的小景观，可能是为了期待高级官员的访问。
这两条隧道以前从未用于核试验，其入口于 2018 年被拆除，当时朝鲜宣布自行暂停试验核武器及其洲际弹道导弹 (ICBM)。
领导人金正恩表示，由于美国在无核化谈判中缺乏对等步骤，他不再受该禁令的约束，朝鲜今年恢复测试洲际弹道导弹。
韩国官员本周表示，朝鲜准备“随时”进行核试验，时间将由金决定。
