The Biggest Tech Scam Of Asia 2021–2022

“Ziptech” broke the hearts of those kids who saved up money, ruined businesses, ruined freelancers…

Today I am going to share about one of the biggest tech scams that took place in a South Asian country, named Pakistan.

Before I discuss the tech scam in details, I will make you familiar with the key elements first. For understanding everything easily, let’s break the key elements into three sections;

Pakistan PC Gamers (PPG — A group of PC gamers in Pakistan),

Ziptech (Premium Tech Store),

Loss.

The Beginning

Pakistan PC Gamers is a Facebook group which comprises gamers from all over the country, Pakistan. Zeeshan Ali Khan established PPG in 2011 with the primary purpose of promoting PC gaming and E-Sports, along with highlighting important developments in PC gaming in Pakistan. The intention was to make a trustworthy and dependable community for Pakistani gamers.

As time passed by, the growth of the PPG community also increased. At a certain point, members of the Pakistan PC Gamers community started selling their new or used PC components for cheap. When the PPG community was growing nationally, reputable PC components stores even offered their PC parts for a flagship price. This was beneficial for all the PPG community members.

There were a few individuals who scammed others, and so the PPG community began to offer Pakistan PC Gamers approved verification for individual businesses and even local stores. The verification showed that community members can trust the verified seller, so it encouraged buyers to buy from PPG verified sellers to avoid most of the scams.

Ziptech — Premium Tech Store:

During the shortage of silicon micro-chips, the prices of graphics cards eventually went up exponentially throughout the globe. For an individual to import graphics cards to Pakistan from anywhere around the world, was a troublesome task as whenever an expensive product is shipped to Pakistan, the shipping and the import fees are high and that would eventually discourage a person from ordering by themselves.

In 2017 or 2018, a premium tech store named Ziptech joined the Pakistan PC Gamers community. Ziptech gained too much fame and respect from the beginning in the PPG community, as he delivered new/used graphics cards to community members for a significantly cheap price. No one expected such a cheap price during that period of crises.

Almost half of the PPG community took benefit from this store. Who wouldn’t, when you can see the best steal deal for the graphics cards? Ziptech started selling graphics cards but through pre-orders. Many people pre-ordered, there were local gaming zone owners who pre-ordered graphics cards in bulk quantity, there were students/freelancers/individuals who saved their money slowly and gradually or they lent it from their family or friends in order to pre-order the graphics cards.

In 2018 to 2020, Ziptech delivered almost all the pre-ordered graphics cards to its rightful buyers. This helped the store get an immense reputation and respect among the community.

Here comes the PPG group now, as Ziptech was one of the best tech store in Pakistan delivering cheap tech products, Ziptech applied for the PPG verification. His reputation post in the group got almost 250 comments in his favor, ensuring the PPG seller’s verification.

Loss:

As time passed by, the amount of people supporting Ziptech increased immensely. The store offered compensation to those who didn’t receive their products on time by upgrading their graphics cards or consoles variants. This further grabbed the attention of the community members.

But one day, the road to unexpected events came into existence.

Ziptech failed to deliver the products to the rightful owners. He kept on taking huge amounts of money from not only the community members but people outside of the community by offering pre-orders. Now remember, people were just booking their tech by pre-ordering through Ziptech.

The delay in deliveries increased significantly. Ziptech owner would post videos apologizing about delays and letting people know that they would receive the tech by a few months. After a few months, the community members started posting in the PPG group, but the moderators of the group rejected their posts initially as if they were just hate posts.

But little did they know they weren’t.

Ziptech began to delay the delivery further because of some stock shipment issues. The administrators of the PPG group also got in touch with the Ziptech owner and came to a conclusion that the owner would pay the compensation. Ziptech owner also shared the same thing with PPG that he was having some shipment issues and the graphics cards and tech containers were blocked at the customs office.

After a few months passed by again, Ziptech owner asked for more time again too, which was quite frustrating for those who pre-ordered tech items. Almost everyone demanded refund or instant products delivery.

All of a sudden, Ziptech contact numbers were switched off. The customer support team was just letting the people know that their products will be delivered soon after a few months.

It was too much now, so people started posting on PPG frequently, and the posts were approved. When this matter was looked at, PPG administrators tried their best to take legal actions.

The scam was of around 15 million pakistani rupees.

Affectees:

There were students who were financing their studies by working as freelancers, there were individuals who were full-time freelancers, there were gamers who earned through gaming, and there were local gaming zone businesses. All of them were affected horribly. Many went through a lot after taking loan from friends/family and not getting their tech product.

As per the latest reports, the Ziptech owner ran away to Turkey and is planning to move to Europe.

There are multiple ongoing cases on Ziptech owner for scamming people. But if he manages to escape to Europe, the chances of all Pakistanis recovering their money will be lesser.
