5 Myths That Might Be Damaging Your Happiness

Many people are highly ambitious and successful, yet not happy from the inside.

One of the biggest reasons behind it is they continuously struggle with it, but don’t know what exactly happiness is.

Happiness is the ability to enjoy your life and be content with it, no matter what the situation is.

Yet, the majority of people don’t understand this and believe in some common lies about happiness that, in reality, hold them back to live their life to the fullest.

Although there’s no foolproof way to happiness, you can make your crisis an opportunity to make meaningful changes.

However, here are five myths that might be sabotaging your happiness at your back.

External Factors Can Get You Happiness

According to most people, I’ll surely be happy once —

I land my dream job or get a promotion;

I get a perfect life partner;

I lose weight…

Fortunately, these are only thoughts, not reality. And one article in Forbes proves the same.

Sure, achieving your goals will provide you happiness, excitement, and pleasure, but that’s only for a short while. Your joy will immediately fade away once you see the shore of the next obstacle.

Additionally, after you get the thing you want, you’re likely to chase behind another, then another, and by this, this chasing cycle never ends.

However, it doesn’t mean that you’ll not run behind your goals and dreams just because they provide short-term contentment. But, instead of the result, value the entire process; only then you’ll get sustainable happiness.

You Can’t Be Happy if Things Aren’t Working According to Plan

Frankly, you can be.

According to Dr. Sophia Godkin — if you believe in this useless thought, you’re putting unnecessary restrictions on your happiness. Because, in reality, it has nothing to do with your happiness.

In life, there’ll often be situations that won’t go to your plan, and when you won’t be able to control them.

During that period, it depends on how you want to spend those situations — by being extremely unhappy or by overcoming them like a pro.

Happiness Is a Natural State of Human Being

It is one of the most unhelpful myths about happiness that I came across.

Undoubtedly, having an optimistic mindset can never do any harm to you. It can light your mood during any condition.

But, the reality is much opposite from this. In reality, much of our life is filled with challenges, struggles, and pain. That’s why it’ll be unreasonable if someone expects their life to spend happy constantly.

The reason is our brain was never designed for happiness. Study proves that it always thinks about our survival.

And, in fact, after ending a day smoothly, we think about playing the next day more safely than being happy because we worry about rejections, failures, embarrassment, etc., even though most of them won’t happen.

However, what you can do is accept your challenges and struggles as a part of your life. That way, you will not only be able to handle those situations but also enjoy them.

If You’re Unhappy, You’re Flawed

Just as happiness is not a state of human beings, being unhappy occasionally doesn’t mean you’re flawed, defective, or mentally weak.

It’s absolutely normal if you’re not happy all the time.

Sure, life is pleasant, but sometimes it’s hard too. We’ve to go through many tough and rough situations. And it’s obvious to get caught up in those situations.

After a loss, you’ll certainly feel sad. During a financial crisis, you’ll surely be stressed. You’ll undoubtedly be angry if someone close to you ditches you. You’ll definitely… and the list goes on.

Because all of these are emotions, it’s human nature to express different emotions in different circumstances. This is how our minds have been made to function.

That’s why, if you’re sometimes not happy, don’t assume your mind is defective because this thought alone is capable enough to make you suffer.

You Can’t Be Happy With a Simple Life

This is, without any doubt, one of the worst things many people believe.

Many people think you need a luxurious life to lead a happy life. According to them, a normal or a simple life is boring and contentless.

However, it’s probably not.

You can definitely be happy with a simple or balanced life as long as it is what’s important to you.

So, whenever you found people instigating you to compare yourself with social media stars, rich, or luxurious people, remember this is your life — your journey — which you’ve led. People with rubbish thoughts are only here to make it tough.
