Psalm 2 makes a striking declaration: in the face of a world gone mad, God creates and maintains order through God’s anointed one, Jesus Christ.
So far, in Psalm 2 we have heard what people are saying on earth and what God is saying in heaven.
Now Jesus speaks:
“I will announce the decree of the Lord:
He said to Me, ‘You are My Son,
Today I have fathered You,” (Psalm 2:7 NASB).
Jesus gives this eternal decree. A statement that what he says will surely and positively be done. There should be no doubt about it.
God the Father spoke, speaks, and will speak to his Son outside of time as humans know it. He declares you are my Son, the Ruler, for all time.
“Ask it of Me, and I will certainly give the nations as Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth as Your possession.
You shall break them with a rod of iron,
You shall shatter them like earthenware,’” (Psalm 2:8–9 NASB).
God announces that Jesus must intercede for sinners and gives power to reign over them. Jesus must submit himself first (the cross) and then he will have dominion over all.
Jesus accomplished this while on earth when he submitted himself to man and died for us. His choosing the cross doesn’t mean he’s inferior. Rather, he loves us enough to submit to his creation.
The day is coming when all resistance to his rule will be broken. By his imposing iron scepter, which easily shatters the enemy. His foe described as fragile as a clay vessel compared to the magnificence of Christ. When it shatters it will be visible to all.
Keep in perspective the message of Psalm 2 always. What happens in the world today was preordained by God prior to the creation of the universe. It’s all His plan.
