wc [-clw][file1 file2 … fileN]

wc stands for word count.  clwstand for character, line and word.

Find how many files are in the presentdirectory: ls | wc -w

 

spell[file1 file2 … fileN] 

ispell[file1file2 … fileN]

Check ASCII text files and outputs all thewords it considers misspellings.

 

cmpfile1 [file2]

cmpcomparetwo files and merely tell you where the two files first differ.

 

difffile1 file2

difftakes two parameters and displays the differencesbetween them on a line-by-line basis.

 

gzip[-v#] [file1 file2 … fileN]

gunzip[-v] [file1 file2 … fileN]

zcat[file1 file2 … fileN]

Compress and decompress data gzip, or GNUZip.

 

tr string1string2

The “translate characters” command operates onstandard input—it doesn’t accept a filename as a parameter. It replaces all occurrencesof string1 in the input with string2.

/home/larry# tr [:lower:] [:upper:]

This is a WEIRD sentence.
