What is AEC, EPC and OO? Industry Terminology Defined!

I recognize that a lot you come to this blog for general Acrobat information and are unfamiliar with some of the terminology that I am using in my posts.  The first thing you should know is my position at Adobe and my background.  I am currently working as the Business Development Manager for the Architectural, Engineering and Construction industry vertical at Adobe.  My background is that I am a civil engineer and have worked in heavy and process construction, oil & gas, and consulted for technology implementation for large capital facilities.  So let's talk terminology. ..

I know that several of you may define the following terminology in different ways, but these are my definitions.  Adobe uses the term AEC (Architectural, Engineering and Construction) as an all encompassing term for the entire industry.  I define AEC as it relates to how the project is executed.  The examples of these types of projects would include those where the architect role takes the lead.  These would include projects that are aesthetically pleasing such as commercial buildings and stadiums.

The next term I use quite frequently in the blog, is the term EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction).  Some would define EPC as Engineering Process and Construction since they heavily favor plant type projects.  The examples of EPC projects would be those where the engineer role takes the lead and they would include projects such as refineries and power plants.  A simplistic way of defining the difference between AEC & EPC would be that AEC is aesthetically pleasing and EPC is engineered to work.

The last term really goes across both industry verticals and that is the Owner and Operator.  Whomever is owns and operates the capital facility would be the OO.  It is a simple as that.

I have had several comments such as "I like your blog but what the heck is AEC, EPC, and OO?"  I hope this helps and you are gaining valuable information whatever industry you work in.

Have fun,

Jonathan
