否定
1、常見的否定詞
1、not
(1)My boss didn’t tell me to wear jeans. - 我上司沒有告訴我要穿牛仔褲。
(2)My boss told me not to wear jeans. - 我上司告訴我不要穿牛仔褲。
注：需要注意的是否定詞是在對哪一個動詞否定，這決定了否定詞應該放在哪個位置。另外，對動詞的否定和對動詞不定式的否定表現不同。一般動詞否定爲：助動詞+not+動詞原形。此時時態表現在助動詞上，而動詞恢復原形(觀察上例)。動詞不定式的否定直接在前面+not。
(3)Dave is an Australian, not an Austrian. - Dave是澳洲人，不是奧地利人。
(4)I met him on the street, not at the office. - 我在街上遇見他，不是在辦公室。
注：多段句子中，通常會省略相同的部分，比如主語和謂語，避免重複。保留不同的，強調的地方就可以了。
(5)She loves him not because he is handsome, but because he is warmhearted. - 她愛他不是因爲他長得帥，而是因爲他很貼心。
注：not because...but because.不是因爲，而是因爲...
2、no
(1)I have no time. - 我沒有時間了。
=I don’t have any time.
(2)I don’t have any one to depend on. - 我沒有人可依賴。
=I have no one to depend on.
注：not any = no. no + 單數可數名詞，負數名詞或不可數名詞。
(3)No students are allowed to enter the room. - 學生不允許進入這個房間。
(4)He is not a thief. - 他不是一個小偷。
He is no thief. - 他絕不是小偷。
注：當用激烈的情緒對否定進行強調時，就用第二種句式，意爲絕不是。
3、never
never一般用在動詞前，如果有助動詞，那麼通常放在助動詞(包括be動詞和情態動詞)和一般動詞之間。
(1)It never snows in the Sahara Desert. - 撒哈拉沙漠絕不會下雪。
注：過去不會，現在和將來都不會，當表示不變的客觀事實時，用一般現在時(初中語法裏講時態的時候講過)。
(2)You should never walk alone at night. - 你不應該晚上一個人散步。
4、hardly, scarcely, rarely, seldom
(1)His success is hardly possible. - 他的成功幾乎是不可能的。
(2)That injured child could scarcely. - 那受傷的小孩幾乎不能走。
(3)I rarely listen to classical music. - 我很少聽古典音樂。
(4)England has seldom won the World Cup. - 英國很少贏得世界盃。
注：這類詞和never一樣，不可以用於雙重否定,也就是說，這類詞，包括never在內，都不可以和not一起用。
5、few, little
few = not many, little = not much.
(1)Few (people) are satisfied with his answer. - 幾乎沒有人對他的答案感到滿意。
注：satisfied是“使...滿意”的意思，使滿意的對象在前面作主語，自然就用被動語態。
(2)He showed little interest in math. - 他對數學沒什麼興趣。
2、部分否定和全否定
部分否定顧名思義，就是對某整體的一部分進行否定。
(1)Both of my friends did not go abroad for advanced study. - 我的兩個朋友並沒有都出國留學。
注：這就是部分否定，如果是全部否定那就是：
Neither (None) of my friends went abroad for advanced study. - 我的朋友沒有出國留學的。
(2)He did not read all of these comic books. - 他沒有讀完所有的漫畫書。
住：not 和 all在一起時，不論這兩者誰在前誰在後，都是部分否定。意爲“不都是”而不是“都不是”。
【如果你數學比較好的話，應該會發現這個和數學命題與集合的原理是一致的，“所有元素都滿足...”，與其對立的命題則是“存在元素不滿足...”，也就是部分否定(包含全部否定的可能)，如果是全部否定，則是”不存在元素滿足...“或者“任意元素都不滿足...”】
所以上例中的全部否定是：
He did not read any of these comic books. - 他沒有讀任何漫畫書。
或者：
He read none of these comic books.
(3)She does not always agree with me. - 她並不總是贊同我。
注：很多人可能直覺上以爲是“她總是不同意我”，注意這樣不對，這也是部分否定。
(4)Not everybody can be a poet. - 並不是每個人都能夠做一個詩人。
(5)Beautiful flowers do not necessarily smell sweet. - 漂亮的花朵聞起來未必香。
注：除了necessarily, 還有quite, altogether, completely, entirely, exactly等副詞，和not連用時表示部分否定。
3、雙重否定
一般用來表示肯定。
(1)You can’t make an omelette without breaking some eggs. - 不打幾個雞蛋就沒辦法做蛋卷。
注：言外之意就是，想要做蛋卷就必須打幾個雞蛋。
(2)It is not unusual for couples to quarrel. - 對於夫妻來說，吵架並不是不同尋常的事。
注：言外之意就是，夫妻之間吵架是很尋常的事。
4、否定的慣用表現
(1)He is by no means a fool. - 他絕非一個傻瓜。
注：by no means絕對不是，絕非。其用法相當於not...at all, 意爲一點也不。
例如：
He is not a fool at all. - 他一點也不傻/他絕不是傻瓜。
(2)Traveling to the moon is not a dream any longer. - 到月球旅行不再是夢想。
注：not ... any longer=不再...，表示相同意思的是no longer，其用法如下：
Traveling to the moon is no longer a dream.
(3)You cannot be too careful when you drive at night. - 你晚上開車多小心都不爲過。
注：這句話很不容易理解，很容易理解爲：你不用太小心...，但我們先把原來的句子寫出來就明白了：
You are too careful when you drive at night. - 你晚上開車太小心了。
我們發現這句話纔是“不用太小心”的意思，因爲too本身就有否定的意思，所以這裏的例句是雙重否定，意爲：你無論多小心，都不是“太小心”，也就是“多小心都不爲過的意思”。
(4)It was not long before the earthquake stopped. - 不久之後地震停了。
(5)I didn’t graduate from university until I was 25. - 我25歲才大學畢業。
注：直譯是：我沒有畢業，直到25歲(才畢業)，until，直到...
這句話也可以寫成：
It was not until I was 25 that I graduated from university.
(6)I cannot help admiring his courage. - 我不得不佩服他的勇氣。
注：cannot help情不自禁，忍不住可以直接+ving
也可以用cannot but + V原形代替。
(7)He can ride a motorcycle, not to mention a bicycle. - 他會騎摩托車，更別提自行車了。
不用否定詞地否定表現：
(1)Who knows what will happen tomorrow? - 誰知道明天會發生什麼呢？
注：意思就是不知道明天會發生什麼。
(2)This book was too boring for me to read through. - 這書太無聊了，我讀不完它。
(3)The story he told me was anything but boring. - 他告訴我的故事從不無聊。
(4)Five hundred dollars for a pair of shoes is far from cheap. - 這鞋子太貴了。
(5)Heavy fog kept me from driving fast. - 大霧使我不能開車很快。
注：keep ... from ..., stop...from..., 阻止...，防止...
特殊用法，見得多了就熟悉了。
