Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America.
When reports came into London Zoo that a wild(adj,野生的) puma had been spotted(識別) forty-five miles south of London,
they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate(vi. 累積；積聚),
experts from the Zoo felt obliged （必要，應該）to investigate（調查）,
for the descriptions(n. 描述，描寫；類型；說明書) given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily( 英 [ɪk'strɔ:dnrəlɪ] adv.很，十分，特別，極其； 離奇地； 出奇； 倍加) similar.
The hunt（搜索） for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her.
It immediately ran away when she saw it,and experts confirmed（證實） thata puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered（adj.被困得走投無路的）.
The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening.
Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits.
Paw prints（爪印） were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clinging（黏着） to bushes.
Several people complained of 'cat-like noises' at night and a business man on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree.
The experts were now fully convinced(英 [kənˈvɪnst] adj.確信的； 深信的； 有堅定信仰的) that the animal was a puma,
but wherehad it come from ? As no pumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country,
this one must have been in the possession(英 [pə'zeʃn] n.有，所有，擁有； 領地； 財產，所有權，佔有物，所有物； 持有違禁物 )
of a private collector and somehow managed to escape.
The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught.
It is disturbing(英 [dɪˈstɜ:bɪŋ] adj.煩擾的； 令人不安的 ) to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.
