英語中倍數的表達
A是B的N倍的表達
通常A is N times more than B 的翻譯主要根據N的大小有兩種翻譯[文獻1]
- N大於1的情況 ，翻譯爲 A是B的N倍 或者A 比B多 N-1倍；
- N爲小於1的百分數 ，翻譯爲A 比B 多+百分數；
下面筆者就上面兩種情況說明
N大於1，A 是B的N倍的表示
主要有三種方式表達，其中方法2的表示比較正式而且不容易引起歧義，其他表示可能會引起歧義，因此要根據上下文的環境推斷其正確意義，但多數情況下第1和第3種表示的意義都爲A是B的N倍.
- “A is N times the size (lengteh ,price, etc,) of B”;
- "A is N times as + 原級+ as B "
- " A is N times +比較級+ than B"
引用文獻[1]的例句：
1)Canada is about three times bigger than India. 加拿大爲印度面積3倍。
2)She earns five times more than I do.她掙得錢是我的5倍。
3)The book is three times as long as that one.這本書是那本書篇幅的三倍。
4）Georgia has too many counties already, 159 to be exact, nearly three times more than California.佐治亞州有159個縣，數量將近爲加利福尼亞州所擁有縣的3倍。（加州有58個縣）
N小於1的情況
當表達式中出現百分數的比較，例如“百分數+比較級+than”應該理解爲 比…多/大/高…。
例如下面例句:
1)Wheel A turns twenty percent faster than wheel B.[文獻2]
A輪轉的比B輪快百分之二十。
2)Russia is hardly in a position to be particularly threatening to the U.S. and Europe:Last year, its GDP was 30 percent smaller than that of the Netherlands. 俄羅斯目前幾乎不會對美國和歐洲構成威脅，因爲去年俄羅斯的國內生產總值比荷蘭還少30%。[文獻1]
其他百分數表示上升或下降
1)In the last ten years, obesity rates in the US have increased by over 60%.美國人的肥胖率在過去的十年中超過了百分之六十。[文獻3]
2)Your prices exceed world prices by 7%. 貴方的價格超過世界市場7%。[文獻3]
3)There has been a 15% decreasse in the number of violent crime in this area.這一地區的暴力犯罪下降了15%。[文獻3]
4)Their income fell by 64 percent.他們的收入減少了64%。[文獻3]
倍數增加或者減小的各種表示
單純的倍數增加表示
增加到N倍可以用動詞表示，一般有如下幾種形式表達[文獻4]
1)increase to N times
2)increase N times
3)increase by N times
4)increase by a factor of N
5)There is a N times increase/growth…
以上四種表達方法都譯爲：增加到N倍。
表示淨增加
有如下幾種方法表示淨增加：
1)A is as large again as B.=A is twice as large as B. 應譯爲：A是B的兩倍大[文獻4]
2)Line A is as long again as line B. 譯爲：A線比B線長了一倍，或者A線長度是B線的2倍。
3)A is half as large again as B.= A is one and a half times as large as B.譯爲：A是B的一倍半。
單純的倍數減小表示
減少到1/N的表示方法如下，動詞一般爲decrease,reduce,slow down,go down 等：
1)decrease N times
2)decrease by N times
3)decrease by a factor of N
如以下例句：[文獻5]
1）This sort of membrane is twice thiner than ordinary paper. 譯爲：這種薄膜是普通薄膜的一半。
2）The equipment reduced the error probability by a factor of 5.譯爲：這種設備誤差的概率降低了五分之四。
倍數所體現的英語思維
很多例句中出現了動詞+by+N times，這裏的動詞可能表示增加或者減少，by對應的理解爲乘以[文獻6]或者除以這兩種操作，而操作的數量則用後面的N times 表示，因此，爲了避免混淆，在表示增加的語言環境中直接譯爲是原來的多少倍，而在減少的語言環境中翻譯爲減少爲原來的幾分之一即可。
