聖經課上，神父總給保爾打五分，因爲他能背誦所有的祈禱詞，還有新約和舊約，甚至上帝在哪一天創造了何物他也記得清清楚楚。保爾打定主意要向神父問個明白。剛上聖經課，神父纔在椅子上落座，保爾便舉手要求發言，得到允許後，他站起來說： “神父，爲什麼高年級的老師說地球已經存在幾百萬年了，而聖經裏卻說是五千……”神父那尖銳、可怕的喊叫立刻使他像泄了氣的皮球： “你說什麼，孽種，你就是這樣學聖經的？！” 保爾還未及答話，神父就揪住他的兩隻耳朵，把他的頭往牆上撞去。一會兒，被撞得頭暈目眩、嚇得魂不附體的保爾已被扔進了走廊。
