"lunch" refers to a noon-time meal 通常而言，lunch指的是中午喫的那頓飯 and "supper" to an evening meal regardless of size, 而supper指的是晚上喫的那頓飯 while "dinner" specifically refers to a larger or more formal meal. 而dinner指的是比較豐盛的、比較正式的那頓飯。
以下這些大餐只能用dinner表示 Sunday dinner, Thanksgiving dinner
在美國不同地區，有的地方和有的人午飯更豐盛，所以可以 have dinner at noon 中午喫大餐，例如勞動者需要中午大喫以便下午幹活有力氣，這樣的喫飯順序就是dinner午餐+ supper 晚餐。也有的地方晚餐更豐盛，那麼中午喫的就是lunch，喫飯的順序就是lunch午餐+ dinner晚餐。
