下面是從網上找來的解釋（我覺得不是很正確）：gloves:是從一句俗語來的,其實就相當於hurt somebody。我估計是從拳擊那邊引過來的，as in boxing gloves/本來rachel是站在phoebe一條戰線上的（she thinks phoebe's chewing hair is endearing），沒想到pheobe“恩將仇報”的諷刺了她一回，Rachel覺得被出賣了，所以說phoebe has the gloves on.說有時候你還會聽到類似的說法：“not lay a glove(fingure or hand) on”， which means leave unhurt.

Phoebe: (shouting as he leaves) If you never smoke again I'll give you seven thousand dollars!
