Vol. 1 《劍16》Academic Test4 Reading Passage 2
Changes in Reading Habits
What are the implications of the way we read today?
Paragraph 1
Look around on your next plane trip. The iPad is the new pacifier for babies and toddlers. Younger school-aged children read stories on smartphones; older kids don’t read at all, but hunch over video games. Parents and other passengers read on tablets or skim a flotilla of email and news feeds. Unbeknown to most of us, an invisible, game-changing transformation links everyone in this picture; the neuronal circuit that underlines the brain’s ability to read is subtly, rapidly changing and this has implications for everyone from the pre-reading toddler to the expert adult.

Passenger。Never heard about him??(從沒聽說過他?)
02
tablet/'tæblɪt/ n.

Statue of Liberty(自由女神像)左手握的就是一塊tablet,上面刻着JULY IV MDCCLXXVI 即July 4, 1776(1776年7月4日),美國通過The Declaration of Independence(《獨立宣言》)的日子,所以這一天也被稱之爲Independence Day(獨立日)。

e.g. phenomenon /fɪ'nɒmɪnən/ n. 現象→[pl.] phenomena

(p.s. [pl.]
flotilla: flot+till(er)+a
a flotilla of= a lot of/ a number of / plenty of,但是a flotilla of email的畫面感是不是很強?
但是,也要注意English Collocations(英語慣用搭配),不能按照中文的翻譯生硬亂套,例如a flotilla of books就會很奇怪,描述書很多的時候,常見的表達是a pile of books(一摞書)或者piles and piles of books(許許多多的書)。
a flotilla of的常見搭配:
a flotilla of ships/cargo boats(一列船隊/一列貨船)
a flotilla of changes
a flotilla of turtles

News Feed(信息流)是社交軟件Facebook(臉書)2006年發佈的一個功能,和WeChat(微信)的Moments(朋友圈)類似,即把用戶關注的朋友和網頁的update states(更新狀態)和comments(評論)發送給用戶。
當然,這一功能也引起了用戶的不適,“users feared the updates made it too easy for others to track their updates and activity on Facebook.”(摘自techopedia)用戶擔心Facebook的這一功能會讓別人很容易追蹤到個人的更新和動態。
WeChat(微信)在添加好友時也會有類似的選擇,chat only(只聊天)還是chat and share the moments(聊天且朋友圈可見)。
