At the time of this writing, most people are still thinking of digital works of visual art when they think of NFTs—and that’s totally fine—but, as I mean to make clear in this book, that incarnation only scratches the surface of what the technology is going to make possible. Massive moves are underway at this very moment to expand what NFTs can do. They are happening in the background and out of view of most people, but they are definitely there. Businesses and creators everywhere are rushing to prepare for a brave new world of NFTs in art and commerce.

NFTs are digital files, so just about anything comported digitally can be an NFT. For example, a concert ticket or a plane ticket can be an NFT. A digital discount code can be an NFT. A digital receipt can be an NFT. Utilitarian NFTs are going to be useful for cultivating relationships between brands, creators, and consumers.
