熱詞解析(2) — Squall

Why are people looking up squall?

Squall was among our top lookups on January 30th, 2019, borne by weather reports which were full of sound and fury, signifying nothing but that most of you will be very cold tonight.

近期,各大詞典裏squall這一單詞都上了搜索頭條,原因就是氣象預報裏關於寒流的報道。

An arctic front crosses the region late this afternoon and evening, with high impact snow squalls and brief strong to damaging wind gusts. Bitterly cold temperatures and dangerously low wind chills follow tonight into Thursday morning.
— National Weather Service (forecast.weather.gov), 30 Jan. 2019
國家氣象局有這樣一則報道:今天下午晚些時候和晚上,一股北極鋒穿過該地區,伴隨着強烈的暴風雪和短暫的強風。今晚的嚴寒和危險的寒風將持續到週四早上。

What does squall mean?

The relevant sense of squall is “a sudden violent wind often with rain or snow.” The noun also functions in a figurative manner, with the meaning “a short-lived commotion,” and when used as a verb may mean “to cry out raucously” or “to utter in a strident voice.”
