1. make/put a dent
原句：As I say it's a good day for the citizens of Albuquerque when we can put this big a dent in the local drug trade.
make/put a dent 英文釋義爲to decrease something slightly or to make something somewhat weaker，即“使……(少量)減少或減弱”。
We tried our best to fix the problem, but nothing we did seems to have made a dent.
2. couple (of)
原句：Take a couple of deep breaths for me.
這個在口語中常能聽到，意思與我們學過的few基本一致，表示“一些；幾個”。
值得注意的是，有時候能聽到of，有時完全聽不到，其實一般都可以。因爲couple既可以作爲名詞用(此時需of)，也可作爲形容詞用(此時無需of)，這和few的用法也是一致的。
I'll live maybe another couple years.
Across the street from me there are a couple of police officers standing guard.
3. green light
原句：All right. School bus is clear. Got the green light.
其實這個表達也很容易理解，當我們到了一個十字路口，綠燈亮了，就意味着允許通行了，在口語當中，我們可以加以擴展，這個表達不僅限於用在交通當中，也可以表示任何情況下的“允許；批准”。且一般用於以下兩詞組：
give / get the green light
與此相近的，還可用consent替代，如：
At approximately 11:30 p.m., Pollard finally gave his consent to the search
大概晚上11點半的時候，波拉德最終同意進行搜查。
4. amount to
原句：Honestly I never expected you to amount too much.
amount作爲名詞表示“數量，總量”的意義是我們所熟知的，其作爲動詞一般表示“達到某數量”。此處的意義更爲少見一些，表示“達到某質量，某高度”。下面各舉一例：
The bill amounts to $10. (動詞，數量)
wanted her son to amount to something. (動詞，高度、質量)
trying to figure the amount of time it will take. (名詞，數量)
5. picture
相信有人看到這個詞就笑了，picture不就是初中生都學過的“照片”嘛？有什麼好說的？不然，在口語中，picture至少有兩個常見用法，是我們不熟知的。先看原句：
I didn't picture that. 我萬萬沒有想到。
此處picture是作爲動詞來用，意義與imagine非常接近，就是在腦中形成某種場景。還有另外一種說法，表示意外：
I wasn't expecting that.
另外，picture作爲名詞，有一個與此處意義非常相近的含義，表示"一種生動的描述，能讓你充分想象出某事物"。見下例：
the book gives a detailed picture of what is happening
6. Not a clue.
想象一下你當年做數學題的時候，毫無頭緒，你會怎麼表達？I don't know.還是I have no idea.Anyway, 現在你又學會一個表示完全否定的句子啦，那就是
Not a clue. / I've got no clue. / I don't have a clue.
